Holiday Travel Safety

With so many families taking Christmas/New Year’s trips together for the first time in three years, it is essential to consider holiday travel safety during these busy times.  You can never be too careful, too prepared or too aware.  Paula Twidale, AAA’s Senior Vice President of Travel says, “Plan ahead and pack your patience, whether you’re driving or flying.”

Taking to the Highway

  • Make sure your car is in good condition for a road trip.

  • Pack an emergency preparedness kit, supplies and a first aid kit in your vehicle.

  • Share travel plans with a family member or friend.

  • Check the weather before departing and along your route. Plan for travel around any storms that may be coming.

  • Be well rested and alert.

  • Buckle up, slow down and don’t drive impaired.

  • Follow the rules of the road and use caution in work zones.

  • Give your full attention to the road. Avoid distractions such as cell phones.

  • Make frequent stops and stretch your legs and back. During long trips, rotate drivers. If you’re too tired to drive, stop and rest.

  • If you have car trouble, pull off the road as far as possible.

Traveling In the Air

  • Print a boarding pass, in addition to using the airline’s app on your phone.

  • Wear comfortable clothes and take an extra layer, as planes can be chilly

  • Try to avoid lines and delays, by packing only a carry-on luggage

  • Stay hydrated.

  • Share travel plans with a family member or friend.

  • Make sure to arrive early to the airport

  • Always keep your luggage and other items close to you

  • Know what you can and cannot take through the TSA security checkpoint
